Leading the physiotherapy evolution: What I’m most looking forward to at APASC25

From world-class speakers to bold ideas shaping the future of physiotherapy, I can’t wait to welcome you to Adelaide for APASC25. If you haven’t registered yet—this is your sign to join us.

Only got one minute? Check out my quick video summary of this blog.

The energy of connection

Every time I attend a national conference, I’m reminded why I love this profession. There’s nothing quite like walking into a space full of passionate physiotherapists with curious minds, shared purpose, and a sense that together, we’re shaping something bigger than ourselves.

This year’s theme, Lead the physiotherapy evolution, captures that perfectly. We’re not just keeping pace with change—we’re driving it. From ground-breaking research and innovation to new models of care, APASC25 brings it all together under one roof.

The power of lived experience

Our new opening keynote, Gill Hicks AM, sets the tone for what I know will be an unforgettable few days. Gill’s story, from surviving the 2005 London bombings and rebuilding her life, is one of courage, hope and transformation.

Her talk reminds us that recovery is more than movement—it’s courage in action. It’s about helping people rediscover meaning and strength when everything else has changed. That’s the essence of what we do every day as physiotherapists.

I’m looking forward to hearing Gill’s reflections on resilience and purpose, and how those lessons can inspire the way we lead, both in our practices and across the health system.

“Gill’s story reminds us that recovery is more than movement—it’s courage in action.”

Shaping the next generation

Another highlight for me is the NextGen White Paper plenary session, where we’ll explore the future of our profession, together. This paper captures the voices of students and early-career physiotherapists, and the insights are powerful.

It calls on all of us to reimagine how we support the next generation. To close the gap between education and practice, strengthen mentorship, and create workplaces that truly nurture growth.

As someone who’s spent a career in education and aged care, I know how strong systems shape strong clinicians. This session will dive into what needs to change, and how every member—no matter your career stage—can help build a sustainable, future-ready workforce.

If you’ve been meaning to engage more deeply with APA’s workforce reform work, this is the place to start.

Five reasons I’m excited about APASC25

  1. The science and evidence: With more than 400 presentations across 12 clinical streams, this year’s program showcases the latest research and innovations in physiotherapy. Every session I attend sparks new thinking about how we can translate evidence into better outcomes for patients.

  1. Flexibility in learning: I love that you can tailor your own journey—stick to your specialty, or branch out and explore something new. Whether you’re into cardiorespiratory, paediatrics, musculoskeletal or digital health, there’s a stream that speaks to you.

  1. Connection and community: You’ll be joining over 1,600 physiotherapists and 120 exhibitors—it’s an incredible networking opportunity. These are the conversations that lead to new collaborations and lifelong friendships.

  1. Innovation meets practice: Don’t miss Pitchfest—where clinicians and innovators bring forward real-world solutions that could change the way we work. It’s inspiring to see ideas move from concept to care.

  1. Leadership and purpose: This conference is about more than professional development—it’s about leadership. It’s a chance to reflect on the kind of profession we want to be and the legacy we’re creating for those coming next.

The small touches that make a big difference

It’s the extra details that make APASC25 special this year. Morning yoga sessions to start your day refreshed. The APA's signature blue on the bridge, a moment of connection and visibility for our community. Gender-neutral toilets for inclusivity. Blue lanyards on staff so you’ll always find someone to help. And a new delegate deals program, with discounts on restaurants, transport and local attractions.

Every element has been designed to make you feel welcome, supported and inspired—because that’s what our conferences are all about.

Looking ahead

We’ll continue to share more about how our advocacy and reform work strengthens our profession—through initiatives like the NextGen White Paper and our ongoing campaigns for fair access, full scope and a thriving workforce.

We’ve made remarkable progress, but our greatest strength lies in collective momentum. When we gather as a community, ideas turn into action.

If you haven’t secured your ticket yet, don’t wait. Online registrations close this Friday, but on-site registrations will be available at the conference in Adelaide. Come be part of the energy, the learning, and the leadership that defines APASC25.
